Sources are predominantly India and Sri Lanka, Brazil, Tanzania etc. This beautiful stone also occurs in China and the USA. The color is usually dark blue to blue/violet.
The hardness of this stone is 7.5 on the scale.
Iolite is a blue stone that has been on the market for a long time. Its beautiful blue is highly sought after and it used to be called "water sapphire". It is also used for jewelry. This stone is also called cordierite. Its beautiful blue is very close to sapphire blue but is affordable. Very large pure stones are very rare and expensive, just like garnet or peridot.
